Sid Le Rock - EQTV Session 18 Podcast - April 2013

Canadian born Sheldon Thompson AKA Sid Le Rock has been wowing music lovers with his unique electronic fusion sound since first bursting on to the scene almost 10 years ago. Based in Germany for the last decade the one time Toronto resident is joining forces with what is undoubtedly one of the cities leading record labels, the much-lauded My Favorite Robot Records. ‘Busted with a Bag of Bliss’ is without a doubt a stellar addition to the My Favorite Robot Records catalogue, fitting as it does with the label’s musical ethos of twisted dance/indie fusion. For Sid Le Rock it is perhaps his most accomplished LP to date and is certain to set fires alight this summer!

We caught Blond:ish twice in Miami, both times late at night, we were exhausted, but their brand of electronic driven soul energy keep us dancing till their last track. Get a feel for their vibe here, “a timeless mix which can be heard in many different settings outside the club with tracks that we don’t necessarily get into a live set in a techno club at peak time. At the moment, we’re really feeling certain artists like NU, Acid Pauli, Christian Loffler amongst others and rarely get to play their records, so we took this as a good opportunity to have a bottle of wine, mix and enjoy some of them. Midland - Panorama Bar (Sub:stance - 15/2/13)

The unassuming Leeds DJ/producer has little regard for tempo or genre. Although house, techno and dubstep are being woven ever more tightly together, few producers have the genuinely unbiased output of Midland. His music spans Washed Out, Stateless and Caribou remixes; house, garage and bassier fare. Accordingly, his DJ sets are just as unpredictable. “I love Lawrence, Bibio, Radiohead,” says Midland, enthusiastically. “And Workshop stuff, and Laid Records, plus I’ve grown up with a revered view of the R&S horse.” One thing does become clear: Midland is still very much exploring the electronic world around him. He has no one agenda, but Midland has been added to the Life and Death showcase Miami and this makes perfect sense to us!

Swedish producer Andreas Tilliander becomes TM404 for his latest project. Limiting himself to nine pieces of classic Roland equipment – an MC-202 MicroComposer, four TB-303 bassline synthesisers, and four drum machines in the form of two 606s, a 707 and an 808 – Tilliander constructs a suite of polyrhythmic tracks recorded in one take each with no post-arrangement, going so far as to restrict himself to only one of the two wave forms on the 303, with track titles that read like catalogue numbers. A new album on the way for Kontra-Musik takes its name from the one number Roland skipped during their run in the ’80s, due to the Japanese word for “four” sounding the same as “death.” Although much of TM404 takes a fairly scientific approach to his music, it also does a surprisingly good job of creating warm, organic sounds. Largely avoiding the temptation to drive his 303s into the “squelch” that typifies acid, his music has more in common with the alchemical techno of Morphosis or Rhythm & Sound’s muggy yet weightless dub, Tilliander calls it “somnolent acid.”

Long Island Electrical Systems is a label headed by DJ, producer, and former L.I. hardcore kid Ron Morelli. Since 2010, L.I.E.S. out of Brooklyn has churned out a slew of singles by tried and tested mad men like Legowelt as well as new school spectacles like Svengalisghost, Steve Moore, Delroy Edwards, and joint ventures such as Two Dogs In A House. Preserving and caring for vinyl culture, the music and ethos of L.I.E.S. equally embraces the politics of Chicago house, punk’s DIY, noise rock, modular synth dreams, smart art school moves and gut reactions. Exciting, refreshing and anything but boring, this is probably the label where the late Arthur Russell or his contemporary equivalent would like to be on. But hear for yourself. Nothing but L.I.E.S. with Ron Morelli.

Tale Of Us - Romy S. Podcast - November 2012

This set opens with the classic Boards Of Canada - Open The Light [Warp] and continues to beautifully build into one of the best mixes of the year. Although Warp is a good reference point for the Tale Of Us vision, a more accurate one might be Kompakt (a catalogue full of big, warm synthesizers and—in most cases—even bigger vocal hooks) an imprint whose approach and sound quite closely resembles their label Life and Death (citing the fact that Tale of Us took their name from a Supermayer song). Tale Of Us have a great sensibility and enjoy playing with sound. You can hear this in the way that they pick tracks and the way that they produce this US post-hardcore/post-punk stuff to Ninja Tune ’90s trip-hop stuff to very psychedelic ’70s things.

Till von Sein grew up in the nineties with skateboarding and hip hop, he was running his own street wear shop for seven years until he in 2006 decided to focus 100% on his music career. Berlin based deep house party rocker Till von Sein really began to define his present style and sound in 2011 with his first solo album on Suol, but you can still sense the hip hop influences from his past. However, his heart and dedication is to be found in DJing and for the past two years he has been travelling all over the world. A dj set from Till Von Sein is soulful and pop infused, you for sure never know what you are gonna get - only thing certain is, he will rock the party. This excellent 3 hour mix is filled with lots of new jams from Pets Recordings, Chopstick & Johnjon, Tigerskin and so on and on… now on tour in North America, Till von Sein brings his Tilljam to Toronto this Friday, see you on the dance floor!
